Based off the classic short
Robot Is Serious, which if I remember correctly, was bEDO fILM's first attempt to popularize foreign cinema over here in the States. RIS is a tale of post-Cold War nostalgic sentiments; the Romanian filmmakers yearned for the glorious days of Soviet rule. If my Film History courses at the community college are paying off, I'm pretty sure the film used the robots as allegory to portray the two competing economic systems.
The vacuum cleaner robot is a callback to the old Communist government before
Ceauşescu, and his eventual overthrow of the mad scientist's bipedal robot is the film predicting the eventual Marxian collapse of Western hypercapitalist influence. The film also deals with owner-laborer relations, rampant alcoholism, and the then-emerging rave culture which the filmmakers believed to be the primary factors in the steady decline of their country's moral rectitude.
Fun Fact! The landlord killed off in the first few minutes is now the Minister of Information in the current government. It pays to get your face out there, kids.
